Voluntary Sector Support

The High Sheriff of Surrey recognises the contribution made by many voluntary bodies to tackle social problems and to create harmonious and safe communities.

Surrey – High Sheriff Youth Awards – Helping young people make Surrey safer

Since its launch 22 years ago, the High Sheriff Youth Awards has funded projects which help young people to prevent or reduce crime and so make their communities stronger and safer.

In 1993, Sir Peter Anson, the then High Sheriff, launched a scheme to encourage young people to develop their own ideas for reducing crime. Such was his determination and enthusiasm that his successor, Tim Goad, took up the baton. Over the next two decades, successive High Sheriffs have lent their names and energies to promoting and evolving a charity that reaches young people across the spectrum, often in communities that are marginalised or have identified needs.

Grants from the High Sheriff Youth Awards can be anything from £100 to £2,000 or occasionally grants of £5,000 are awarded. Last year some 39 project applications and initiatives were assessed and 27 received funding.. They give young people the opportunity to play sport and take exercise, develop personal skills and hobbies, and grow in personal confidence and self-esteem. In turn, this can prevent anti-social behaviour and contributing to community cohesion.

The HSYA is itself generously sponsored by public, corporate and private donors. In 2014-5 this included Surrey County Council, the 11 Boroughs and Districts of Surrey; the Peter Harrison Foundation and individual donations. In recent years we have also received support from Surrey Police, the Chrimes Family Trust, Henry Lumsden, Henry Smith Charity, The Hazelhurst Trust and Waitrose Community Matters. ExxonMobil have, for the last 22 years, hosted an annual evening of celebration, at which projects funded by HSYA are presented to an invited audience. The charity is supported by volunteers who undertake assessments and administer the scheme.
