Gwent 2019/2020

Welcome to the home page of the Gwent High Sheriff’s website.

High Sheriff

Dame Claire Clancy DCB DL

Kestrel Barn, Estavarney Lane, Monkswood, Usk, Gwent NP15 1QE

Claire spent her career in public service and was Chief Executive and Clerk to the National Assembly for Wales for ten years until 2017 when she retired. Her responsibilities were to ensure that the Assembly, and the sixty Assembly Members, were provided with the property, staff and services so that Assembly inspired confidence and had a reputation for accessible and efficient democracy. Before joining the Assembly, Claire was Chief Executive of Companies House and Registrar of Companies – the first woman to hold this position in over 150 years. Earlier posts in her career included Director of Corporate Services at the Patent Office and Chief Executive of Powys Training and Enterprise Council. Claire also spent two years on the island of St Helena when her late husband, Mike, was Chief Secretary and later Governor; here she did some teaching and other voluntary work.

Claire was born in Essex in 1958 and moved to Wales in the 1980s. She has a degree in psychology from the Open University. Claire is an Honorary Graduate of the University of Wales and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath (DCB) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for public service in Wales. She is a Deputy Lieutenant of Gwent.

As well as the formal duties of the Office of High Sheriff, Claire will be visiting all the amazing projects supported by the Gwent High Sheriffs’ Community Fund. Already, in her links with these projects, she has been greatly impressed by the unsung heroes within the small charity and voluntary groups who give so freely of their time, energy and resources. Claire will use her year to recognise the achievements of these members of the community who help make Gwent a caring, safe and inclusive place to live.

In addition to making the sworndeclaration set out by the Sheriffs Act 1887, at her Declaration Ceremony, Claire also made her own promise for her year as High Sheriff:
“I promise to give my time and energy during my year of Office to serve the Queen, the Shrievalty and the communities of Gwent. I will listen and learn from the work of all those I encounter, but also strive to nurture and encourage them. With integrity and humility, I will uphold the traditions of the Shrievalty and use my stewardship of this historic Office to support the work of those who help make Gwent a caring, safe and inclusive place to live.”
